Another band announced – yay for viking metal!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

A third band has been confirmed for Wacken 2009 (the big event is in 10 months and one day as I write this) – and it’s Norwegian Viking metal pioneers Einherjer. Thanks Blabbermouth!

Viking metal is something I’ve written about in the past. Although I love Amon Amarth a great deal, I don’t generally get into viking metal as much as say, pirate metal. At least Einherjer don’t sound folksy like Alestorm, although their Wikipedia page suggests that some of their albums are more folk while others are black metal.

At any rate, good to see the announcements continue!

tickets, get your tickets…

I try to read the Wacken forums every day to get any new snippets of information… a recent post stated that the total tickets sold in the first four weeks was around 25,000! 10,000 of those sold in the first 24 hours of sales! That is an insane number and given the shows capacity is 65,000, I am sure they will sell out very quickly. It’s not often you have a 20th birthday after all… \m/

The second band announcement was made last week, and it is old school metallers Cathedral. While I haven’t heard much of their stuff in the past, what I have heard, I like a lot. This is what I love about Wacken – seeing bands you’ve heard of but not necessarily paid too much attention to in the past. I’ve been listening to various bits of Cathedral over the last week and I must say, I’m psyched to see them!

Machine Head

The first band confirmed for Wacken 2009 is… Machine Head.

Good news, we all love this band. Dave and I have seen them at least twice before, and in fact we have tickets to see them next month again (with Slipknot).

The official Wacken web site says that bands will be announced regularly over the next few weeks. Sure. Their definition of “next week” has already been clocked at over three weeks. But we’ll still be checking obsessively, oh yes, precious.

While we wait patiently for a band announcement…

While we were at Wacken 2008 the daily newpaper that came out had an item about how the Wacken franchise was expanding, and that the first country likely to get their own WOA-style festival (on a much smaller scale, of course) would be Australia. We were obviously pretty stoked by that bit of news, but it looks like the first non-Wacken Wacken is going to be in Brazil in May 2009. Bummer. Well, not for the Brazilians I guess.

We have tickets, I repeat, we have tickets

At least, we think we do. We got confirmation emails but our credit card has not yet been charged… I’m sure it will be though, in due time.

Ticket sales are announced on the site now, but they weren’t when we got them – we were tipped off by a very excited Stu and then found them on the Metaltix site. Dave had to use BabelFish to translate the page to double check that he was buying the right thing.

Not a single band has been announced yet, but Wacken 2009 here we come!
