New announcements?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I was checking a couple of facts on the Wacken Wikipedia entry when I noticed that there’s a couple of extra bands listed for 2010 in the entry: Devour The Masses and Crysis. They’re not listed on the official Wacken site (German or English versions – the German version often gets updated first) and a Google search does not bring up anything. According to the edit history of the page, Devour the Masses was added a couple of days ago and Crysis at the end of August.

Of course, the fact that it’s on Wikipedia does not make it true (duh). But it’s interesting nonetheless, yes?

First bands confirmed for Wacken 2010

They don’t waste any time, do they?

The first bands announced for Wacken 2010 are the mighty Immortal, and serious but out-there medieval metallers Corvus Corax.

I’m pretty impressed that announcements are being made already. Perhaps the organisers learnt their lesson from 2009, when they got hammered on their own forums and elsewhere for not releasing any information about the line up for such a long time – meaning the information when it did come couldn’t possibly live up to the hype and anticipation that surrounded it. Last year’s first band (Machine Head) wasn’t announced until mid September, before tickets even went on sale.

Whatever the reason, I’m excited as hell (don’t forget, any picture can be improved by adding Immortal to it) and will be eagerly awaiting further announcements, as always!

Running order… decisions decisions!

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

People are always complaining about line up clashes at festivals but really I think there’s not a lot that can be done– no matter how you arrange the bands someone is always going to be disappointed. Last year I missed out on some bands I wanted to see and no doubt the same thing will happen this year.

To help people make sense of the order — there is, after all, about six different stages — the organisers this year have made a planning tool available. Simply check off all the bands you would like to see, and the tool generates a timetable for you with the clashes marked.

Table Legend:
down: Time overlap with next entry
up: Time overlap with previous entry
up-down: Time overlap with both, previous and next entry

That’s a lot of angry red clashes! I’ve got to do some thinking over the next few days… plus, I’ve just realised that bands playing in the Wackinger — like Swashbuckle, who I definitely want to see — aren’t included in this tool.

Gah! tough decisions to be made. Who would you cut?

Warrior at Wacken

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Our side-trip to Switzerland this year is largely homage to my love of two Swiss icons: H.R. Giger and Celtic Frost. While I haven’t had any luck trying to line up purchase of one of Tom Gabriel Warrior’s death masks, the tie-in just got a little cooler with the announcement that the ex-Celtic Frost front man will be performing on stage at Wacken with Norwegian black metal supergroup Sarke.

It’s like they knew I was coming!

Good news thrash fans, the legendary Anthrax are now on the Wacken bill. This is the sort of news I was looking forward to… a few more like that please!

Fear this

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

So Fear Factory have just been confirmed for Bloodstock Open Air, OMFG. Wacken organisers, please please PLEASE pick up that phone and book these legends right now. NOW!

I know that without Christian and Raymond, it’s only half the Factory, but I think for the time being it’s as good as we can get. And that is still going to be fucking epic.

Stop! Metal time!

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

So this years Wacken is not without controversy. If you read the forums, there are quite a few unhappy people talking about the unexciting line up, especially for a 20th anniversary. On first appearance when you look at the list, it does seem like a lacklustre line-up, especially when you look at what the Hellfest festival has pulled out.

So far, 46 bands have been announced, with a few self-confirming (it’s a shame when a band has to do that!). I definitely think the organisers have made some serious mistakes and while Wacken itself is an institution and always will be, reading some of the posts on the forums, especially from people who have been coming for many years, there is a lot of discontent among the faithful.

I must say that I’m also of the opinion that comparing to the Hellfest line up, Wacken is not as amazing this year as the 2008 show was (and that was epic).

However, enough whining and bitching, let’s take a look at what we have. Consider the fact that we have 3 days of music, and you’re never going to get every band you are dying to see. My *must see* bands from the list so far are;

So that’s 20 bands that I really badly want to see. That’s a helluva lot if you think about it. Now let’s add the bands I would like to check out between my *must* list;

So that’s another 7 bands. Not to mention the additional 15 that should still be added before the festival (going on tradition of around 60–70 bands on the bill).

They may not all be super popular bands, but fuck me, it’s still a brilliant line up of bands that here in Oz we may never get to see. Of the ones I listed, we have only seen 5 live. Running Wild announced this was their final show ever, and while there is somewhat of a power metal overload this year, it’s still something to see.

I am not going to say how I think that BFMV and BMTH (sorry, can’t bring myself to type out their names) are a really strange addition to what is typically a classic/dark metal festival. But hey, everyone needs a break to go to the toilet or drink some more beer between the star acts.

To sum up this fucking long post, I can see why this years line up is disappointing people who have been coming to Wacken for many years. I probably share the sentiment to an extent, where I was hoping to see some acts that we’ve been dying to catch live – Type O Negative would be one that immediately comes to mind.

But on the whole, am I totally fucking excited about Wacken 09? In a word, FUCKYEAH.

PS: Where is the Gojira announcement? Come on Wacken organisers, don’t disappoint these Aussie travellers!

Heaven, Hell and various states in between

PERTH, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 02: Ronnie James Di...

Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Pretty big news, I think: Heaven and Hell, the version of Black Sabbath with the one and only Ronnie James Dio on vocals, has been announced for W:O:A 09.

This is exciting because:

  1. I’m a huge Ronnie fan
  2. Nope, that’s the only reason

We saw Heaven and Hell when they played in Perth in 2007. Unfortunately I was a little late to buy tickets – like, a couple of hours late – and all the good seats were taken. The organisers, for reasons known only to them, decided to replace what is normally the standing only area at the front of the stage with rows of seats. So of course, most of the people down the front stood up, filling a quarter of the area, and the rest of use squinted from the back.

The other thing that sucked about that show was that Down played support, so the first time I got to see a band I absolutely love, was from the bleachers while a bunch of senior cits snoozed at the front of the stage. Fortunately I got to see them in 2008 and they kicked arse.

So anyway, back to the story at hand: WACKEN! DIOYEAH!

It’s inevitable: Saxon and/or Manowar will play Wacken 2009

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Let’s face it: the Germans are *weird* about their power metal.

Manowar and/or Saxon have played at something like 99%* of all Wacken festivals.

Saxon have a new album out.

Are we placing bets, people?

* actual number made up, but it’s a lot

Only way to feel the noise is when its good an loud

They’re coming. In among the vikings, the folk metallers, the legends and the sensibly dressed, Motorhead are coming, and when I mean coming, I mean going to Germany. I toyed with the possibility of them going but I didn’t think I’d be that lucky. Whether any other big names decide to make an appearance isn’t anything I’m concerned with anymore. Seeing Motorhead at the most metal of metal shows to play their brand of rock n fucken roll is the kind of thing I refuse to miss out on.

I’ll admit, in spite of my usual sneering at other people as they kneel and worship celebrities and gods, I would gladly pull up a pew at the church of Lemmy and get stuck into the sacramental bourbon. He is rock and roll incarnate. But, you don’t need me to preach to you, through a rockin grapevine of friends I’ve become aware of a movie that can do that for me. Here endeth the lesson.
